Fruit Newsletter, Week of October 3rd

Boy, do we need rain! The dry weather from the farm's standpoint has
both a good and bad side. It stopped the apple rot, a little late to help many varieties. At the same time it has severely reduced our fall raspberry crop.

We now have; Cortland, Stayman, Rome, Red Delicious and Fuji apples. Also have good supply of sweet and crunchy "snack Galas" in 5 lb. bags. Ya-Li PearsWill start picking Granny Smith and Arkansas Blacks next week.

Our fresh cider quality is great with the apple varieties now available. Good time to start putting the winter's supply in the freezer.

Have very large crop of delicious Ya Li Chinese pears. We pick them ripe, ready to eat. They will keep very well in your refrigerator for several weeks. Also still have good quanitiy of Asian Pear apples. Get them while they last!!!!

****We're now producing the "very low temperature pasteurized apple
slices" in three varieties - Cortland, Jonagold and Stayman. These slices
will keep four months and longer in your refrigerator. Our Apple SlicesReady for you to use to make a delicious apple pie, apple crisp, dumplings, fried apples, etc. Using our apple slices, the new Pillsbury rolled pie crust and their recipe; even a husband can make a perfect apple pie. No apples to buy. No additives. Open the package, dump apple slices and juice into mixing bowl and proceed as you would if you had just peeled the apples. Another neat thing about using these slices: Fill pie pan level full, not mounded above as you would do if you had peeled the apples. When baked the the crust and the apples are level with the top of the pie pan.

We're making lots of our fresh gourmet apple sauce. Now that very sweet Fuji apples are available, in the next few days we will be making a limited quantity of sugar free apple sauce. Also at least one batch of whole apple (except core), with no added sugar, apple sauce.

Finally, if it should rain in next few days, it will be good time to plant berries and we will be selling what plants we have available.

****Remember-----for the remainder of this season, our retail market will be open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Come see us soon!
